Katsuura Big Doll Festival - Chiba

At the Katsuura Big Doll Festival, one of the events in Katsuura that precedes spring time, Hina dolls adorning the stone steps of Tomisaki Shrine, the special Hina doll stand of Kakuo-ji Temple, and other areas, welcome visitors each year. The Big Doll Festival in Katsuura City has been held since 2001, with around 7,000 Hina dolls being brought in as “foster children” from Katsuura-cho, Tokushima, through the network of Katsuuras all over the country. Everyday, the 1,800 Hina dolls that decorate the stone steps of Tomisaki Shrine are put out in the morning, and then all of them are put away at night. In addition, the whole city is adorned with Hina dolls during the event, such as all the stores of the shopping districts being decorated with ingeniously-made Hina dolls.
