Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival - Tokushima

This autumn festival has been held since ancient times to celebrate a bountiful catch of fish and a good harvest.
The event takes place over two days, on the Saturday and Sunday before the second Monday of October. On Saturday, the shrine’s mikoshi (portable shrines) are paraded through the town. In the evening, a Yoimiya vigil and a fireworks display are held as a dedication to the gods. Sunday features the festival’s highlight, the popular O-hamaide, where large taiko drum floats known as chosa are bravely carried into the ocean.
