The Gojinkousai Festival of Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a traditional event that has been performed more than 1,000 times, originating from welcoming Sugawara no Michizane upon his visit to Hofu. Men dressed in white carry mikoshi shrines through the streets calling out, “Kyoudai! Wasshoi!” (Brothers! Heave-ho!), and when the signal is given at 6 p.m., they leave the main shrine with an Oajirokoshi portable shrine containing the spirit of Michizane, heading for the temporary shrine at Katsuma no ura.
