Hofu Tenmangu Gojinko-sai Festival (Hadakabo “Naked Monk” Festival) - Yamaguchi

The Gojin-kosai Festival of Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a traditional Shinto ritual commemorating the arrival of the Imperial decree that pardoned Sugawara no Michizane (an aristocrat administrator in the ninth century).
At this ritual, which has taken place for more than 1000 years, men dressed in white carry mikoshi portable shrines through the streets calling out “Kyoudai! Wasshoi!” (Brothers! Heave-ho!)” When the signal is given at 6 p.m., they leave the main hall (honden) with an Oajirokoshi portable shrine containing the spirit of Michizane, and head to the otabisho rest stop at Katsuma no Ura, the local harbor where Michizane first arrived in the town in 901.
