Yoshida Fire Festival - Yamanashi

Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, the Yoshida Fire Festival is held every year on August 26th and 27th by Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine.
On the afternoon of the 26th, a large mikoshi shrine and mikage mikoshi procession are led through the parishioners’ town, and when night falls, over 100 giant taimatsu pine torches nearly three meters high, and smaller torches at the front of each home are lit, turning the town into a sea of fire.
When dusk approaches on the 27th, parishioners and spectators holding “Susukino Sacred Tree branches” walk after the mikoshi around the ground of the shrine in what can only be referred to as sublime.
