Nachi Fire Festival - Wakayama

The Nachi Fire Festival is one of the three largest fire festivals in Japan. It is the annual returning to the waterfall of Hiro – jinja Shrine from Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. Twelve six-meter tall ogi-mikoshi represent the waterfall carrying the twelve gods of Kumano. In transferring the gods from the main shrine to the waterfall, twelve giant taimatsu pine torches weighing 50 kg–60 kg are carried down the path to the waterfall for a purification ritual with the flames. In 2015, the festival was nationally designated as an important intangible folk cultural property.
