The mikoshi brought into Edo Castle during the Tokugawa period have been viewed and worshiped on a grand scale by successive shogun since the days of the third shogun of the Tokugawa clan, Iemitsu, in what is known as the Tenka Festival. As the head of the three great Edo festivals, it is one of Japan’s three great festivals along with Kyoto’s Gion and Osaka’s Tenjin festivals.
