The two jizo of Entakuji Temple, the large stone Jizo Bosatsu, and the small, secret Buddha (that is still in its altar) said to have been passed down since the temple was founded, are usually enshrined in two separeate halls. During the 24 hour goma (fire) ritual from noon on February 13th to noon on February 14th, the smaller Buddha is placed on top of the larger Jizo Bosatsu, and the pair are enshrined in the jizodo, a national important cultural property. Many visitors come from across the country to see the ritual, as it is said that the ritual causes the eyes and ears of the two jizo to open and grant the prayers of good men and women, warding off misfortune. The smaller, secret buddha statue that grants prayers is made of stone, while the larger Bosatsu is a rare stone-hearted wooden statue coated in lacquer and gold leaf. Both are designated as prefectural cultural properties.
*Please understand that while each individual statue offers benefits, they are enhanced when praying to both statues together.
