Tokamachi City is an area of heavy snowfall in the southern part of Niigata Prefecture, with around 2 to 3 meters of snow falling in winter. The Tokamachi Snow Festival was born from the local populace’s belief of “befriending the snow and enjoying the snow.” During the festival you can see a great many snow sculptures (works of art made from snow) made by the local populace, and there is something for everyone to enjoy at the Festival Hiroba Plazas opened all over the city, such as warm local cuisine and winter entertainment.
