This festival is held at the Japan heritage sites of Kairakuen and Kodokan gardens in Mito. There are approximately 3,000 plum trees in 100 varieties planted at Kairakuen, and about 800 plum trees in 60 varieties at Kodokan.
Tourists flock to the Mito Plum Blossom Festival’s various attractions such as tasting plum wines from around the country in the Plum Wine Festival, the Kairakuen UME The Lights 2026 event, where the plum trees and the sea of clouds above are lit up at night, and taking commemorative photos with Mito Komon, the Shogun’s uncle. Furthermore, the Kairakuen Station (a temporary station) is open Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the festival, as well as weekdays between February 24 and March 6, in accordance with yearly highlights, to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the festival.
