Sanja Festival - Tokyo

The Sanja Festival of Asakusa Shrine is held in May, and is the wildest festival in Asakusa during the year. For the people who live in Asakusa, their lives center around the three days of the wild and energetic festival. It is a historical festival that began over 700 years ago and has been handed down to the present through various transitions. The approximately 100 brave mikoshi portable shrines from Asakusa Shrine and the Asakusa district are famous, but there are also events such as the Binzasara Mai dance, designated an intangible cultural property by Tokyo, and Mikomai shrine maiden dance. Every year, more than 1.5 million visitors are expected to come and see the festival that defines Asakusa.
