OGAKI FESTIVAL - Gifu

With a history of 370 years, it is one of the rarer festivals in Japan with three floats bestowed from the Ogaki feudal lord coexisting alongside 10 more floats made by the townspeople. Influenced by the festival culture in the East and the West, floats showing off karakuri dolls and children dancing make their way across the town through the verdant green of Jokamachi.
On the day of the festival, the traditional sounds hayashi festival music echo across the town from the 13 floats early in the morning. When night falls, the floats decorated with paper lanterns gather at Ogaki Hachiman Shrine for a magical atmosphere of hogei with karakuri performances and children dancing plus the pageantry of the turning of the floats.
It was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December this year.
