Soma-Nomaoi - Fukushima

Soma-Nomaoi boasts a history of more than 1,000 years, and is a traditional horseback riding cultural event that is designated as a National Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The Shutsujin (departure for the front) Ceremony takes place on day one, and on day two the Kiba Gyoretsu horse procession, Kacchu Keiba horse race and Shinki Sodatsusen (a competition to capture flags) are held heroically. On day three a ritual known as Nomagake takes place. Wild horses are captured using bare hands and offered to the shrine in what is also said to be the origin of the Nomaoi.
