Nachi Fire Festival - Wakayama

Nachi Fire Festival is one of the three largest fire festivals in Japan. It is the annual returning to the waterfall of Hiro – jinja Shrine from Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. 12 six-meter tall ogi-mikoshi represent the waterfall carrying the twelve gods of Kumano. In transferring the gods from the main shrine to the waterfall, 12 giant taimatsu pine torches weighing 50 kg – 60 kg are carried down the path to the waterfall for a purification ritual with the flames. In 2015, the festival was nationally designated as an important intangible folk cultural property.
